Recently I’ve had a request to make a bow tie for an American director called Zack Taylor. Since he was visiting the Netherlands for his work on the documentary “Cassette: A documentary mixtape“, the request was to make the bow tie ‘cassette themed’.
I decided to attempt making a bow tie in the shape of a physically compressed cassette tape. First I digitally cleaned up a 2D image until it only had the essential shapes of a cassette tape left. Then, I distorted the curves using Inkscape. Finally, I milled the wheels and the body separately and glued the very fragile wheels in place. To finish it off, I engraved Zack’s name and ‘C#’ in the back.
It took me a full two days to realize, but the end result is quite special.
